Is the 9 to 5 working day coming to an end?

The traditional 9-5 working day is the norm for just 6% of the UK’s workforce, a new survey has revealed.

According to the study by YouGov, a minority of people work traditional hours, while half work flexibly with arrangements such as job sharing or compressed hours, allowing them to juggle their commitments outside of working life.

The study also found that, given the option, 37% of workers would prefer to work 8am to 4pm. While 21% said they’d like to work 7am-3pm.

The trend appears to stem from a change in the law in 2014. This gave all workers the right to request flexi-time., and a shift in office culture. In the last two years, more than half of employers (55.9%) have seen an increase in flexible working requests from their employees.

Rob Shaw, Managing Director at Glu Recruit said: “These new statistics reveal that the days of a traditional 9-5 working day could be coming to a close.

“More and more employees are coming to expect flexi-time as a requirement. This is rather than a perk as it has been in the past.

“This will no doubt become ever more common as Generation Z join the workforce. It is vital that employers take this on board and recognise that office culture is changing; their employees value their work-life balance, in the 24/7 society that we live in.”
