Lighten up your job ad with these handy tips

fireworks job ad

With more jobs than candidates currently available, you want to make sure you create a banger of a job ad.

What is a job ad? You ask. This is essentially the first thing a candidate will see – you may also know it as a job spec or description. It’s a document written by an employer that lists the responsibilities of the role as well as the required skills and experience that a candidate needs to have.

There’s a danger that these can be written wrong or without that sparkle that really appeals to candidates. Failure to get this right may mean you get very few applications – or at least very few decent applications.

We’ve got some handy tips that’ll light up your job ad this Bonfire Night.

Your job title matters

As much as we’d like to think that candidates have searched for our companies and applied for a role, 9/10 times the candidate stumbles upon your job ad.
Candidates will search for specific job titles, so it’s worth having a think about the title you assign to your advert.

The controversial one

There is so much controversy around including the salary on your ad. While it all comes down to your personal preference, it’s worth noting that candidates like to know how much they are going to be paid. You’re also much more likely to get a better response rate if you add the salary…

Location, location, location

If there’s no location on your job advert, you could find that people will be applying, getting through to interview stage then pulling out when they realise that the commute is too far.
Take Manchester for example, it’s a big place. If your role is on the outskirts, specify that. If you’re role isn’t accessible by public transport, specify that. It’ll save both you and the candidate a lot of time.

Add a flare of personality

Your job advert is the first insight into your company that a candidate gets. You want to make sure your culture, and everything that makes your business unique, shines through. It’s here where you can add your benefits and standout features, to help a candidate understand you as a company.

Be specific with the details

If there’s a specific programme or software that the successful candidate should have, make sure you mention it. Listing essential experience and training that candidates must have will deter the wrong candidates from applying.

Follow these handy tips and you’re guaranteed a cracker of a job advert.
