Have you had the pleasure of meeting Lady Rotherhamtown yet? Rather like Lady Whistledown of Bridgerton, she’s full of wisdom, sees all in South Yorkshire and has all the gossip.
Unlike Lady Whistledown, she has a touch less restraint, more of a beard and moonlights as the Managing Director of a recruitment business called Glu Recruit…
Recruitment, much like courtship in Bridgerton, is governed by unspoken rules. The organisations that get them, rarely struggle to attract exceptional talent. Those that don’t often mistake activity for strategy.
Allow Lady Rotherhamtown to offer a few observations on the art of modern business courtship.
Observation I: The Best prospects are never truly “on the market”
The most valuable candidates are not endlessly refreshing job boards. That’s why we target both active and passive candidates, meaning we reach those that you may not even realise are open to a conversation.
If your hiring strategy relies solely on advertised roles and inbound applications, you are competing for the actively available – not the strategically desirable!
Headhunting could become your new best friend.
Observation II: If you wish to attract excellence, be excellent first
Note – we say excellent, not perfect.
We’re the first to admit, we’re not perfect! Pretty damn close but not there yet…
No organisation gets everything right. But if you wish to attract exceptional talent, you must work towards excellence within your own business.
This means reviewing practices – long before interviews begin.
Assess your leadership credibility –are your values demonstrated consistently at senior level?
Clarify your employee value proposition – can you clearly articulate why someone should join and stay?
Review your candidate journey – is it structured, timely and reflective of business standards?
Audit internal culture alignment – does lived experience match what you promote externally?
Evaluate growth and development pathways – can you confidently show progression, not just promise it?
Observation III: Indecision is deeply unattractive
This is true in all walks of life… Can’t decide what to watch. Can’t decide where to eat. Can’t decide what to wear. Can’t decide who to hire.
The candidate market is moving very quickly, and hesitation is noticed.
Lengthy hiring processes rarely signal thoroughness. They signal uncertainty.
Top candidates interpret slow feedback, excessive interview stages, and unclear decision-making as signs of internal misalignment – or worse, lack of interest.
And they in turn lose interest too.
The strongest businesses:
- Define decision-makers early
- Align on criteria before interviews begin
- Move decisively once they identify the right fit
Speed communicates confidence. Confidence attracts talent.
Observation IV: Reputation speaks before you do
In both society and business, word travels.
Candidate experience – whether exceptional or disappointing – does not remain private. Neither does leadership behaviour, internal culture, or broken promises.
Even the most compelling offer cannot compensate for:
- Inconsistent communication
- Misrepresented growth opportunities
- Cultural misalignment revealed too late
Transparency is no longer optional. It is expected.
Observation V: Do not merely select. Persuade.
One of the most common hiring missteps is assuming the employer holds all leverage.
In competitive markets, choice is mutual – and did we mention? We are, without question, in a competitive market.
Top candidates are not asking, “Do they want me?”
They are asking, “Is this where I want to work?”
The most effective hiring leaders:
- Articulate vision clearly
- Position opportunity strategically
- Sell growth, not just compensation
They understand recruitment is not a transaction.
It is a value exchange.
And value must be communicated deliberately.
The closing reflection
Every season, some organisations secure the strongest talent with apparent ease.
It is not luck.
It is preparation.
It is positioning.
It is intention.
This being said, your affairs would be far less taxing, were you to entrust them to our capable hands…
