Covid-19 measures for employees

The current health epidemic we are experiencing is a concerning time for everyone.

As individuals we are unexpectedly having to deal with different working patterns, and unfortunately in some cases a loss of employment altogether.

At times like this it is important to pull together and help each other where possible, therefore we have put together a round-up of the key announcements so far for individuals including useful links to government sites.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)

SSP is currently paid at the rate of £94.25 a week, rising to £95.85 from April.

The government have announced SSP is now available to employees from day one of sickness absence, instead of day four, for anyone suffering from the virus or have been forced to self-isolate. Further information can be found here.

Individuals ineligible for SSP

For the self-employed or gig economy workers who do not qualify for SSP, the government have announced Covid-19 sufferers or self-isolators may be able to claim Contributory Employment and Support Allowance (ESA – a basic £73.10 a week for those aged 25 and over, rising to £74.35 in April).

The minimum income for Universal Credit (UC) has been temporarily removed to ensure that time off work because of sickness is reflected in any benefits.

Mortgage holidays

The government has announced that mortgage lenders will offer a mimimum three-month mortgage holiday for those who find themselves in financial difficulty as a result of coronavirus. If this applies to you, contact your mortgage lender for more information.

Additional support

There is new guidance from the government coming out on a daily basis with regards to new forms of employment support to help protect people’s jobs and incomes. Please keep an eye on their guidance for employees here.

We will continue to provide further guidance for employees at regular intervals.
