Number of people in employment reaches new high

The office for National Statistics has reported that more people in the UK are in employment than ever before.

Recent figures state that 32.4 million people were employed in the second quarter of 2018. This equates to an employment rate of 75.7%, with unemployment falling to 4.2%.

Whilst the employment rate grew, the number of job vacancies has also increased. This suggests an uptake in recruitment over the coming summer months.

Rob Shaw, Managing Director at Glu Recruit said: “This is clearly a very positive sign for both businesses and employees alike. More people are working than ever, whilst more businesses are looking to hire. This means that those looking to change careers, recent graduates or school leavers have great recruitment chances over the summer.

“The recent growth looks to have been bolstered in part by growth in the manufacturing sector, which increased its outputs by 0.4% in May.

“This growth, coupled by Yorkshire’s high business optimism and fast growing cities, puts regional businesses and candidates in a great position indeed!”
