It’s that time again… The Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber Business Awards tomorrow and we’re taking a moment to celebrate all of the remarkable leaders who make a difference in our region.
This year, our very own, Rob Shaw, has been shortlisted for Business Person of the Year, and it’s an honour to see him recognised alongside four incredible individuals:
- Dr Perdita Mousley – Rotherham Opportunities College
- Lisa Hawksby – Total Training Provision
- Mark Smith – MAKE YOUR MARK UK
- Martine Tune – Barnsley Hospice
As wonderful as all of this recognition is, it does raise an important question. What makes a great business person? And what makes a good leader?
What makes a great businessperson?
Business is more than just a numbers game, and a great businessperson recognises that. They shape the culture, integrity and long-term direction of their business.
They think long-term
Short-term wins are great – and deserve to be celebrated. But a great businessperson? They look beyond them to build sustainable success rooted in strategy, values, and purpose.
They prioritise people
Strong relationships with customers, teams, and the community underpin every great business. They understand that success is built by people, not just numbers.
They make values-led decisions
Trust and credibility come from consistency. A great businessperson stands by their principles, even when it’s the harder path.
They embrace innovation
Whether it’s adopting new technologies, refining processes, or reimagining possibilities – they’re curious, adaptable, and forward-thinking.
They contribute to their community
Great businesspeople recognise their wider impact and use their platform to empower others, create opportunities, and champion positive change – rather than micromanaging.
What makes a great leader?
Leadership isn’t about asserting a title – it’s about influence, example and the ability to bring out the best in other people.
They inspire confidence
Through their actions, open communication and consistency, great leaders build trust and inspire confidence in others.
They empower people to grow
They recognise potential, nurture development, and create opportunities for their teams to succeed and shine!
They lead with empathy
Understanding people’s experiences, challenges, and motivations creates stronger bonds and in turn, stronger retention rates.
They communicate openly and honestly
Great leaders don’t just talk – they listen. They’re transparent, responsive, and present.
They lead by example
Integrity and accountability are at the heart of every great leader. They set the tone through their behaviour, not just their words.
Why is this important?
At Glu Recruit, we see the impact of great leadership every day – both in the businesses we work with and through Rob’s own approach.
His commitment to people, his belief in his team and his authentic leadership reflect exactly what we value in today’s best businesspeople and leaders.
Tomorrow’s awards shine a spotlight on remarkable individuals in our region and we’re proud to celebrate every finalist and wish them the very best of luck.
