Temporary work is a great way to get into the workplace quickly with short and long-term contracts available.
In general terms, a temporary worker is someone who is engaged by a company on a non-fixed term basis, with this generally being a zero hours contract. The temporary worker’s salary is usually calculated on an hourly or daily rate and is paid weekly based on the number of hours worked.
Some candidates use temporary roles as a stop gap whilst they find something permanent, whilst others now choose to work exclusively in temp roles and become a career temp moving from assignment to assignment.
As a temporary worker you will be employed directly by us, the recruitment agency rather than the employer, so you will be entitled to all the statutory benefits of being an employee such as holiday pay and workplace pension contributions.
Rates of pay are dependent on the specifics of the role, the level of experience required and the seniority of the position, and are paid on an hourly rate for the duration of the temporary assignment.
Keeping your options open:
Temporary roles
allow for a level of
job flexibility
Keep your
CV and skill set
up to date
Exposure to a
variety of different
industry sectors
Opportunity to turn
your temporary role
into a permanent one
There are lots of benefits to temping regardless of whether its short or long term:
Flexibility
If you’re not 100% sure what you want to do temping is a great opportunity to buy yourself some time to consider your next career move. Most temporary contracts have a minimal notice period making it easier for you to move into another role.
Keep your CV up to date
Temping will minimise or remove any unexplained gaps in your CV.
The ability to work in a variety of industries
You may find a temporary role in an industry that you hadn’t considered, or perhaps you’d ruled out before. Temping gives you a chance to ‘try before you buy’.
Opportunities to network
Whilst you are temping you will make lots of new connections. This may be your manager or your colleagues during the time you are there. They may not have a permanent position at that time, but do a great job and they will know who you are and how to find you for when they are recruiting permanently!
Self-promotion
A lot of temporary staff start in a role not suited to them on a permanent basis, but it gives you an opportunity to show the employer what you’re made of. Be early, conscientious, exceed expectations and hopefully they won’t want to let you go when the contract ends. You’re in a prime position for the next temporary or permanent role that becomes available as you’re now a known quantity to them.
