Standard and Random Interview Questions

Interviewq (2)

Just when you think you’ve planned and prepared for your interview, you get in the hot seat and the questions begin. Some you expected, and some make you go ‘eh?’.

The usual suspects:
  • Tell me what you know about our company?
  • Why do you think you’re suited to the role?
  • What do you think you can bring over and above any other candidate?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • If I were to ask one of your friends/colleagues to describe you, what would they say?

Pretty straight forward, yes? These are commonly asked interview questions and with some consideration into researching the business and the job specification, along with a reminder of what makes you so great before you go in you should be ready to smash the answers out of the park. But how about if you were asked these:

These are just random:
  • If you were an animal what would you be and why?
  • Who would win a fight between Batman and Spiderman?
  • What would the name of your debut album be?
  • How do you sell sand to the Arabs?
  • How many golf balls would fit in this room?

Sorry, say what? Believe it or not there may be method behind some of this madness and an employer seeing an opportunity to sell themselves as a less conventional place to work. Maybe the animal says a lot about your nature and your decision on Batman and Spiderman matters not but how you come about the decision may just. The name of your debut album tells them how quick you can think on your feet creatively, and if you can sell sand to the Arabs then you can just about sell anything surely?! Now the golf ball question is hard to explain, perhaps it’s showing mathematical reasoning, careful assumption or your response of ‘I have absolutely no idea’ showing you’re a realist? Either way they start to make some sense, ish.

Luckily, not all interviews have such questions but now you know what to expect just in case!
