Firstly, congratulations on getting an interview! Your application and CV obviously stood out and you’re one step closer to securing a role. Landing an interview is an achievement, so remind yourself of this! It’ll help with your confidence going into it.
You’ve been carefully chosen for an interview based on your skills and experience – but how you dress and present yourself conveys a great deal about your character and viability as a future employee.
Now, it’s time to decide what to wear. In the current climate, some interviews are remote but many organisations are now offering socially-distanced interviews to candidates. If your interview is via a webcam or in person, it’s important to make sure you’re dressed to impress. Remember, it only takes a few seconds to make a first impression.
Above all, you need to make sure you are comfortable in your interview outfit. If you’ve bought it new, make sure to try it on! The last thing you need is to be panicking with minutes to go before you need to go to the interview.
Company dress codes
Take some time to research the dress code of the company. Look at their website, LinkedIn profiles and social media: learn as much about the company as you can ahead of time, and dress accordingly.
Ask your contact at Glu what they believe is the most suitable attire, we’re happy to guide you. We can also ask the employer if you want absolute certainty. Remember, there’s never harm in asking if you’re unsure!
Usually, a business-casual look is appropriate. Something like dark trousers, a smart shirt or blouse and clean shoes. You don’t have to wear a full suit and tie, usually, but try to base your outfit on something you feel comfortable and confident in. If you wear jewellery, try a statement necklace or earrings to make you feel more dressed up. Remember, business-casual is not your gym clothes or lounge clothes – you shouldn’t turn up in trainers or light jeans!
Always take the weather with you
Remember to dress for the weather, too. If your interview is in the height of summer, you may want to wear something less fitted or with less thick material. However, in winter you may wish to wear a smart jacket, jumper or cardigan to keep you warm. Don’t forget, though, that it’s likely that the employer will have air conditioning or heating on. Your safest bet is probably going with layers. Take a jacket or cardigan that you can comfortably remove if you’re too warm.
Don’t forget to prepare for your interview as well!
Finally, remember that it’s a job interview and not a fashion show! Whilst clothes can help to make a great first impression, you still need to be prepared for questions about the business, your experience, your hobbies and why you would suit the role.
That’s where we come in, we can guide you through the whole process; from what to wear to what to say and how to follow up the interview. We’re on your side!
