‘New year, new me’ may be a very cliché quote, but it’s perfect for recruiters. January is the time when people are actively looking for a new role, so it’s the ideal time to hire new talent.
There are many reasons why people start their job hunt in January. Many jobseekers are using the new year as the opportunity to start fresh, while some use the festive break to really think about what they want from their career.

Fresh year, fresh start
We’ve already touched on this, but January is the key time to dive into the candidate pool. People are actively seeking something new after a period of reflection over Christmas.
Equally, January is a great time to think about what your business really needs. We imagine you’ve started formulating some plan for the upcoming year – or the month at least!
While this plan is fresh in your mind, you can identify gaps where you need new employees.
New year, new budget
There are so many things to consider when hiring new staff and unfortunately budget is a big factor. With more roles than candidates available, you want to be sure you’re offering a competitive package, to ensure you secure the best talent.
Sitting down with both your recruitment and budget plan collectively will help give you a clearer idea of what you can afford to spend on recruitment.
Identify the gaps
You may have ended 2022 with fewer employees than you began the year with. Perhaps people left and you never replaced them, but rather distributed their workload to existing employees.
January is the month to assess how effective this was. Is it time to find someone new to put everything they have into that area of the business? Are your current employees responsible for more than they can cope with? It might be time to hire someone new.
