Using AI in your job search – the good, the bad and the ugly

Job searching is stressful, and AI can be a great way of making it easier. With endless applications to fill out, CV tailoring and interviews to prep for, it’s no surprise that people often look for ways to make it easier.

Chatbots, such as ChatGPT, are often favoured AI platforms when job searching. However, it’s important to remember that, like everything, using AI in your job search comes with pros and cons. Here’s our take on it.

The pros

  • Time-saving and efficiency

Job searching can be time-consuming and people often seek out ways to cut corners and save themselves some time.

Chatbots can be used to conduct job searches and to generate answers to interview questions during your preparation.

This allows job seekers to focus their attention on refining their skills and spend more time on practical things such as networking.

  • Personalised CVs and cover letters

Many job seekers like to tailor their CVs to match what a company is looking for, thus increasing their chances of getting noticed.

Chatbots are a great way of creating templates for personalised CVs and cover letters – providing more detail than traditional templates online would give.

  • Interview preparation

Job interviews can be daunting and the preparation, overwhelming. Chatbots can provide interview scenarios, example answers and even give constructive feedback on answers you give.

If you want to improve your interviewing skills and build up your confidence, AI can help you out.

  • Access the latest trends

AI, such as chatbots, can analyse vast amounts of data to provide job seekers with valuable insights into the job market.

They can identify trends, the demand for specific skills, and emerging industries. This will allow you to align your skills and expertise with the current job market demands.

  • 24/7 availability

One benefit of AI is that it’s available 24/7 meaning you can hop online and ask those questions that are keeping you up at night. How convenient!

The cons

  • Lack of human touch

AI, such as Chat GPT, may offer convenience, but there’s an argument that it also strips answers of human touch. No company is going to want AI-driven responses to interview questions, they’re going to want to know the real you.

So, while it’s good for prep, we’d advise you to use these answers as a template and try and modify them to how you would ordinarily phrase them.

  • Privacy and security concerns

Using AI incorrectly may raise privacy concerns, especially if sensitive personal information is shared. You should always be cautious about the platforms you use and the data they disclose to avoid potential data breaches or misuse.

  • Over-reliance on technology

Relying solely on chatbot GPT for the entire job search process may lead to over-reliance on technology, neglecting essential aspects of job hunting, such as networking and building personal connections.

  • Learning curve and accuracy

Chatbot GPT’s responses are based on pre-existing data, and while it can simulate human-like conversation, it is not infallible. The system may make errors, and the learning curve for mastering its functionalities could be steep for some users.

Integrating AI into your job search can be beneficial, especially in terms of time-saving, personalised assistance, and interview preparation.

However, you should be mindful of its limitations, including the lack of human touch and potential privacy and security concerns!

Striking a balance between AI technology and traditional job search methods may be the most effective approach for maximising job search success.

Remember, being yourself is the most important thing when looking for a new role!
