Yorkshire named UK’s leading region for creative industries

Well done to creatives in God’s Own Country! Yorkshire has been named as the UK’s creative hotspot, with 10 out of 50 businesses in Creative England’s CE50 list hailing from the region.

The annual list includes technology, digital media, film and game businesses across the Yorkshire, with the region’s cultural highlights and universities pegged as reasons for its success.  Previous CE50 members have received BAFTA nominations, established western products on the Chinese market and opened International offices.

This year’s list indicated the merging of the tech and creative sectors. The 10 Yorkshire companies listed were: Sheffield-based film and documentary firm Tyke Films; Hull-based greeting cards company Happy Good; Hull app developer Chatta; Leeds game developer Laser Dog;  Huddersfield Game development studio Ocean Spark; Sheffield virtual reality business Slanted Theory; Leeds based entertainment drone tech firm Newsubstance; Wakefield’s Production Park;  Leeds game developer Fierce Kaiju and Sheffield Doc/Fest.

Rob Shaw, managing director at Glu Recruit said: “Yorkshire is really staking out a claim as a cultural and creative hub both in the UK and on an international stage.

“We’re already seeing a real spike in growth and success for creative agencies in Sheffield; there’s a thriving creative community here.

“I think we can owe our creative prowess to our top universities, cultural development, and host of private sector businesses and their academies.

“It’s great to have the spotlight on the great work some of our creative companies do- especially seeing such a great range of independent businesses in the line-up- and I hope it will spur other businesses on in the process.”
